International students receive good news when New Zealand announces plans to reopen borders.

• 5,000 international students to return to in-person study in New Zealand from April.
• All other student visa holders are welcome to travel to New Zealand in October.

Study Group CEO Emma Lancaster has warmly welcomed the news that New Zealand has announced plans that gradually open up its borders and welcome international students.

“We are delighted that students from around the world will soon be able to study in person once more in New Zealand.

The New Zealand Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern confirmed that 5,000 international students will be allowed to enter the country in April, and that entry for student visa holders will resume in October of this year. Prime Minister Adhern said, “New Zealand is in demand. People want to live and work here, international students want to study here, our friends and whānau want to return.”

The announcement updates previous plans which were delayed due to the Omicron variant and vaccination rollout. The New Zealand government also notes that 94 percent of New Zealand’s population is fully vaccinated, and the country has one of the lowest COVID-19 morbidity rates in the world.
